Threads of Grace
Life is messy
Welcome to Simply Susan, where I write honestly about faith, marriage, motherhood and the everyday threads of God’s grace.
So grab a coffee.
Pull up a chair.
I’m so glad you’re here.
Walking humblythrough faith, family and life’s adventures.
Come in, come in! Have a seat around the table so we can pause, pour a coffee, and discover God’s grace woven through the threads of everyday life.
Life hasn’t always been neat and tidy, None of my ducks are in a row. Like many women, I’ve known seasons of joy, disappointment, deep hurt, and unexpected adventure. As I look back over the years, I can see the threads of God’s grace woven through every season—through joy and heartbreak, marriage and motherhood, unanswered questions, quiet faithfulness, and even the unexpected adventures of later life.

Looking back over my life, I can see a thread.
Sometimes that disappeared beneath grief.
Sometimes it seemed tangled beyond repair.
Sometimes it was woven with unexpected joy.
But through every season, God never let go of the thread.
Simply Susan is where I share honest reflections on marriage, motherhood, faith, books, coffee, being a SAHM, working outside the home, motorcycles, and the everyday moments where God’s grace quietly meets us.

Process of Learning: How Do You Learn?
How do you learn? Who I am, how I learn, what I believe makes up who I am as a parent, and therefore a homeschooler. There have been occasions where I've heard a snippet of an idea about something but I don't have much interest so I don't investigate. I may almost...

My Greatest Joy
Is there anything better as a parent, than to witness one's adult child profes their love for the Lord? I don't think so. 🙂 All my children professed their love for the Lord from a young age and whilst I took great delight in it I always felt that the true measure of...

Training Children in Innocence or Ignorance?
Are we raising our children to live in this world as productive members of the community where God has planted them or are we raising them for something else? We have a deliberate and purposed training plan for our children. There are things that we discuss, read and watch that may not be ‘pure’ as such, but we find them to be a beneficial training aid which assists us to work toward our goal. Musings from the pen of a 38-year-old woman who has lived a full life, and had many experiences which has shaped my view of the world. I endeavour to follow Jesus and live by the word of God. So, with that in mind, if you dare, read on…
The next day…
This day was the beginning of a new routine for us, in that we haven’t done ‘lessons’ for quite some time (many months) so we’re trying to ease in gently. Wednesday 31st Jan, 2007 After a full day out in the raging heat yesterday I had a good night’s sleep and was…
Day at Our House – Tuesday
BEEP BEEP BEEP screeches my alarm clock at the sadistic time of 5am. Ugh, I have to get up early today to go ‘to school’! Why do I do this AGAIN? I ask myself. I stumble out of bed and shower, make breakfast for all, prepare a few lunches, kiss John as he…
Homeschool
Appreciating the value of natural learning
We decided not to use the same approach with the boys, allowing them the freedom to learn naturally, preferring to focus more heavily on training their character and life skills. We knew there would come a time when academics would need to become of greater importance- we weren’t dissing it, rather trying to balance it in a wholistic way.
Homeschool Phony
I am a homeschool phony. At least that is how I felt when my child asked to go to school.
Back to basics homeschooling
I’m so glad that I’m not beginning the homeschool adventure now. When I started it was a tad lonely. All networking (if it could be called that) was done via word-of-mouth and (gasp!) old fashioned letter writing and monthly newsletters! I remember fondly…

Coconut Oil: Oils Ain't Oils
Hmmm, it tastes nice, good for the body: inside and out. But, as with most oils, oils ain’t oils. I’ve been using coconut oil for years and over that time I’ve learned a few things. Once wrongly accused of increasing cholesterol levels, coconut oil is now actually…
11 weeks of exercising
Hello, my name is Susan. I’ve been exercising since the 13th April (11 weeks) and I haven’t lost an ounce! Not a pound, not a kilogram. How unfair is that? I know I started off gung-ho. I can tend to get rather zealous with things and fitness is one of…

Mini MasterChef: Lasagne

Eat Fat to Lose Fat?
